A BRIEF HISTORY OF CANNABIS

Over the past 50 years cannabis culture was born through a West Coast lifestyle of enjoying the moment and taking advantage of the beautiful environment we live in. Then our beloved culture became frowned upon after the 60’s with the war on drugs announced famously by Nancy Reagan’s fried egg public service announcement - “this is your brain on drugs”. Smoking grass somehow got wrapped into the same general classification as smoking crack, while one is less harmful than drinking a glass wine.

2727 BC

A leather basket filled with cannabis leaf fragments and seeds was found next to a 2,500- to 2,800-year-old mummified shaman in the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China.

1550 BC

The Ebers Papyrus from Ancient Egypt describes medical cannabis. The ancient Egyptians used hemp (cannabis) in suppositories for relieving the pain of hemorrhoids.

1765

Hemp was being cultivated at an industrial rate. George Washington pushed for the growth of hemp and even grew hemp himself, as it was a cash crop commonly used to make rope and fabric.

1923

Cannabis was added to the Confidential Restricted List under the Narcotics Drug Act Amendment Bill after a vague reference to a "new drug" during a late night session of the House of Commons on April 23, 1923

1968

Refeer Madness begins. The Nixon White House declares a war on drugs. By 1994, the New England Journal of Medicine reported that the "War on Drugs" resulted in the incarceration of one million Americans each year.

2001

Canadian Medical Marijuana Access Regulations grant legal access to cannabis for individuals, established by Health Canada in July 2001. Authorized patients can grow their own pot or obtain it from authorized producers or Health Canada.

2018

On April 13, 2017, a bill to legalize cannabis by July 1, 2018 was introduced to Parliament. It would allow for national use by individuals 18 and over, and possession of 30 grams. Provinces could further restrict possession, sale and use.
